School of Urban Construction (hereinafter the School) is one of the faculties of Hangzhou Polytechnic. It originated from Hangzhou Urban Construction School founded by Hangzhou Urban and Rural Construction Commission in 1979. So far, it has had more than 40 years of experience in civil engineering specialty. It is highly holistic and characteristic in civil engineering specialty among comprehensive higher vocational colleges in Zhejiang Province.
The School has carried out teaching reform thoroughly and adhered to the construction ideas of cluster construction, characteristic guidance and key support. Municipal Engineering Technology (smart construction) was approved as a Provincial High-level Specialty Group Construction Project (class B) in December 2020. Currently it has five majors: Municipal Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Equipment Engineering Technology, Engineering Cost and Construction Economics Information Management.
The School deepens the industry-education integration and school-enterprise cooperation, promotes the reform of talents cultivation mode, and constructs a practical teaching system with professional characteristics of recognition, observation, simulation and assumption, which forms a complementary development with similar colleges in the province. It cooperates with many secondary vocational schools to hold five-year programs, collaborates with Tungnan University in Taiwan to launch joint programs, and actively responds to the strategic cooperation between our college and Bijie Vocational and Technical College in Guizhou to cultivate technical professional talents together in municipal engineering, guide the development of the specialty of Construction Engineering Technology (provincial backbone specialty) and promote the construction of Civil Engineering specialty group of Bijie Vocational and Technical College. It presides over the construction of National Teaching Resources Library of Municipal Engineering Technology Specialty, participates in the construction of National Resources Library of Construction Equipment Engineering Technology Specialty, and cooperates with the National Open University to develop resources library on diversified majors, such as Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management and Road and Bridge Engineering Technology.
The School adopts fostering virtue through education as the fundamental principle, adheres to Tao Xingzhi's educational theory of “love for all”, actively practices the educational concept of unity of knowledge and practice, takes the college's Xingzhi Culture as the guide, creates Lu Ban culture brand, and constructs a cultural education system, thereby cultivating application-orientd technical talents of craftsmanship and sustainable development in the construction industry. There are 1750 full-time students, and graduates are well-received by employers, with an employment rate above 97% over the years.
The School has a teaching team of teaching capabilities and engineering experience and a vigorous management team. There are 56 teachers, among whom more than 50% have senior titles, 68% have master’s degrees or above (including 1 postdoctoral researcher, 1 with doctoral degree and 1 pursuing doctoral degree), and 85% are qualified as double-position teachers. There are 3 Specialty Leading Persons of Higher Vocational Colleges in Zhejiang Province, 1 in the third level of 151 Talent Project in Zhejiang Province, 6 in the second and third levels of 131 Talent Project in Hangzhou, 1 Outstanding Teacher in Ethics in Zhejiang Province, 1 Prominent Teacher in Hangzhou and 1 Teaching Craftsman in Hangzhou. Most professional teachers have obtained the practice qualification of national certified and registered engineers such as National Registered Supervision Engineers, First-class Registered Structure Engineers and National Registered Cost Engineers.
The School has an on-campus training base of nearly 10,000 square meters, including Construction Technology Training Base supported by the central government, Plan for Innovation and Development of Higher Vocational Education (2015-2018), National Production Training Base, Model Training Base for Civil Engineering in Zhejiang Province during the 12th Five-Year Plan, Model Training Base for Intelligent Underground Engineering in Zhejiang Province during the 13th Five-Year Plan, Green Building Technology Training Base under Production- Education Integration and College-Enterprise Collaboration of Hangzhou colleges, Key Civil Engineering Training Base in Hangzhou and Model Training Base for Higher Vocational Education in Zhejiang Province during the 13th Five-Year Plan. The Institute of New Technology Application in Civil Engineering has been established to cooperate with enterprises to carry out research on various new technologies and techniques. The School has cooperated deeply with more than 60 well-known enterprises in the industry, co-established practice bases, and carried out the pilot program of modern apprenticeship, thereby integrating industry and education and dual cultivation mode. It builds Smart Construction and Innovation Center with Zhejiang Construction Industry Technology Innovation Association and Zhejiang Construction Engineering Group Co., Ltd., Digital Architecture College with Yaohua Construction Management Co., Ltd., and Smart Construction Training Base with Guanglianda Technology Co., Ltd..
